Alex is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at the Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management. He received his B.A., in Economics, from the College at Columbia University in 2005 and his Ph.D., in the same field, from the Toulouse School of Economics in 2011. At Tsinghua, he currently teaches courses in Industrial Organization at both undergraduate and Ph.D. levels and Enterprise Organization and Analysis in the Global MBA Program.
His research is primarily in Industrial Organization and Microeconomic Theory, with particular focus on the economics of the Internet. His article, "Search Engines: Left Side Quality verus Right Side Profits", which won the 2014 International Journal of Industrial Organization Best Paper Award, examines Google's incentives to provide users with high quality unpaid search results, in view of the fact that these appear on the same page alongside paid advertisements. His current research concentrates both on developing techniques to better understand how platform firms compete with one another and on pricing strategies in the electronic books industry.
Professor White is the Director of the Competition Policy Program at the National Institute for Fiscal Studies of Tsinghua University. Prior to joining the School of Economics and Management in July 2011, he spent the 2010-11 academic year as a Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Economics at Harvard University.
