Zhirong DUAN currently serves as an assistant professor in the Department of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Strategy at Tsinghua SEM. She obtained her BA in mechanical design and manufacturing from Tsinghua University in 1994; and her MA in industrial foreign trade (Finance and Accounting track) from Tsinghua University in 1997. She graduated from Tsinghua Unversity, with a Ph.D. in management in 2007 and University of New South Wales, with a Ph.D. in marketing in 2011. She has held visiting positions at Wharton School and Harvard Business School in the United States. Now she teaches undergraduate, master and doctoral courses at Tsinghua SEM, including International marketing, International Business, Managerial Thinking, and Research Methodology in Strategy and Management.
Her major research areas include macro marketing and internationalization of firms. As the sole or co-director, she has conducted several important research projects sponsored by organizations such as "Minolu Kobayashi China Economic Research Fund", "Tsinghua University Students Research Training (SRT) Project", and "Tsinghua university SEM's basic research fund". In addition, she published many papers in famous domestic and foreign academic journals. The papers she published include "Analysis on the Domestic Edge of Chinese Manufacturing Enterprises Involved in International Competition and the Implications for International Operations", "The impact of firm risk attitude on its international decisions", "The influence of the international network relationship on internalization: Analysis from software enterprises' outsourcing", "Small Entrepreneurs in China: Creating Trust and Social Capital Leading to Bottom up Civil Society ", etc. During her teaching in Tsinghua University, she has been named "High Achiever of SEM, Tsinghua University", and received an Award for her managerial contribution in public services at Tsinghua SEM. As the team leader, she was awarded "Outstanding Team of Young Teachers” at Tsinghua University. Other awards include “12.9 outstanding counselor award of Tsinghua University" and "Excellent SRT Instructor (second prize) of Tsinghua University". In 2011, her paper "Measuring Assortment in the Marketing Systems”, coauthored with Professor Roger Layton from University of New South Wales, was awarded George Fisk Best Paper on the 36th Macro Marketing Annual Meeting.
She is also an experienced consultant, served as one of the main consultants for Hailong Group and China National Machinery and Equipment Import and Export Corporation, and the external expert of McKinsey Co.'s "Global Champion Survey" project. She was a reviewer for Academy of Management (AOM) annual meeting and The Australia and New Zealand Marketing Academy (ANZMAC) annual meeting. She is a member of the Macromarketing Society.
