SEM Initiates 2011 Summer Camp for Prospective Postgraduate Students

On August 15, 2011, Tsinghua SEM launched the 2011 Summer Camp for prospective postgraduate students. This camp aims to gather together outstanding undergraduates nationwide, who plan to pursue their postgraduate study in the academic year 2012.

The 2011 Summer Camp was held in two phases. Each lasted for four days (the first phase from August 15 to 18 and the second phase from August 18 to 21). Seven out of eight departments at SEM, namely Economics, Business Strategy and Policy, Finance, Human Resources and Organizational Behavior, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Management Science and Engineering, and Marketing, held their first summer camp for prospective postgraduate students. In addition, this was the fifth time for the Department of Economics to organize this activity.

In general, the 2011 Summer Camp received 1241 applications. Following the selection process, 544 outstanding undergraduates from more than 60 universities, such as Tsinghua University, Peking University, Zhejiang University, Renmin University of China and etc., gained their qualifications to enter the Camp.

From August 15 to 21, the summer camp participants not only experienced the history of Tsinghua through campus tour, but also showed their academic potentials by participating in a series of tailor-made lectures and department-specific seminars at SEM.

On August 18, the first phase of the summer camp concluded with respective closing ceremonies held for Masters in Management, Masters in Accounting, Masters in Finance and the doctoral programmes. Participating students then received official certificates from SEM.

Professor QIAN Yingyi, Dean of Tsinghua SEM attended each closing ceremony and delivered speeches. In his speech, Dean QIAN Yingyi talked about the concept and objectives of postgraduate education reform and introduced to the audience some special features of the postgraduate programmes at SEM.

On the same day, the second phase of the summer camp unveiled with the opening ceremonies held for the Department of Economics, and the Department of Management Science and Engineering. In the following two days, students joined 12 seminar and discussion sessions with the faculty members at SEM.

On August 20 and 21, 26 oral defense sessions were held for theses written by 115 students under different research fields and methods. More than 40 SEM professors were present at the oral defense as judges. In average, each professor was in charge of 10 theses in his/her specialized field. In the evening of August 21, Professor BAI Chong-en, Associate Dean of SEM, granted certificates to the participants on the study track of Economics.
