Tsinghua SEM Professor QIAN Yingyi receives 2021 Tsinghua University New Centennial Teaching Achievement Award

QIAN Yingyi, a professor in the Department of Economics at Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management (SEM), received the 2021 Tsinghua University New Centennial Teaching Achievement Award together with eight other Tsinghua faculty members.

QIAN, a distinguished professor of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences of Tsinghua University and the fourth dean of SEM, graduated from Tsinghua University with a bachelor's degree in mathematics. He received his PhD in economics from Harvard University after earning an MPhil in management science and operations research at Yale University and an MA in statistics at Columbia University. He was on the economics faculties at Stanford University, the University of Maryland, and the University of California, Berkeley before serving as the dean of SEM from 2006 to 2018. His research areas include comparative economics, institutional economics, economics of transition, the Chinese economy, and education in China.

Professor QIAN was elected as fellow of the Econometric Society in 2012. He received the Sun Yefang Prize in Economic Sciences in 2009 and the inaugural China Economics Prize in 2016. Professor Qian is the author ofHow Reform Worked in China: The Transition from Plan to Market(MIT Press, 2017) and has published articles in international journals includingThe American Economic Review,Journal of Political Economy,The Quarterly Journal of Economics andThe Review of Economic Studies.

Tsinghua created the Tsinghua University New Centennial Teaching Achievement Award in 2017 as the highest teaching award in the university. It honors faculty members who made outstanding achievements in teaching. Every year, the award is presented to no more than 10 faculty members.
