The Advisory Board of Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management (2015-2016) Announced — New Board Members Include Elon Musk

Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management (Tsinghua SEM) has announced the Advisory Board member list for academic year 2015-2016. The Advisory Board includes two new members and two members taking over from their predecessors. Two new members joining the Advisory Board this year are Elon Musk, Co-Founder, CEO and Product Architect of Tesla Motors, CEO and CTO of SpaceX, Chairman of SolarCity and Professor QIU Yong, President of Tsinghua University. Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft and Ben van Beurden, CEO of Royal Dutch Shell PLC replaced their predecessors to become Board members.

New Advisory Board member Elon Musk is CEO and Product Architect of Tesla Motors, CEO and CTO of Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX), and Chairman of SolarCity. He is also co-founder and former CEO of online payments system Paypal. Recognized as the world’s most innovative company, Tesla Motors recently topped the list of “50 Smartest Companies 2015” by the Technology Review magazine of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and “The World's Most Innovative Companies 2015” by Forbes. Elon Musk was named Fortune’s “Businessperson of the Year” in 2013 for his leadership and innovation breakthroughs across multiple fields.

New Advisory Board Member Tsinghua University President QIU Yong is the Vice Chairman of the Tsinghua SEM Advisory Board. Professor QIU Yong held Cheung Kong Scholar Professorship in 2006, and was awarded the First Prize for National Technology Invention Award in 2011. He was elected academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2013, and was appointed as President of Tsinghua University in March 2015.

The two new Advisory Board members taking over from their predecessors are both leaders in business and technology. Satya Nadella was appointed as CEO of Microsoft in February 2014. At Microsoft, he led the research and development of many major projects and technologies, and credited for the company’s fast growing revenue for Office Cloud Services. Ben van Beurden took over as CEO of multinational oil and gas conglomerate Royal Dutch Shell PLC on 1 January 2014. Shell ranked 1st on Fortune’s Global 500 companies list in 2013.

The Tsinghua SEM Advisory Board was established in October 2000, consisting of over 60 distinguished Chinese and foreign board members who are leading entrepreneurs, business school deans, thought leaders with significant global influence, and Chinese government officials for economic and financial affairs. ZHU Rongji, the founding dean of Tsinghua SEM, is the Honorary Chairman. The Tsinghua SEM Advisory Board provides strategic direction and advises on the school’s plans and positioning, builds strong linkages and relevance to needs of industry, and promotes teaching and research excellence so as to advance Tsinghua SEM as a world-class institution of higher education. The current Chairman of the Board is David M. Rubenstein, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of the Carlyle Group.
